EMBS

What is EMBS?

The Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) is part of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). As the world’s largest professional society for biomedical engineers, it’s field of interest is the application of concepts from the physical and engineering sciences to the fields of medicine and biology. EMBS members are not necessarily electrical engineers, but come from a variety of backgrounds including chemical engineering, biochemistry, medicine, bioengineering and biomedical engineering.

Our Club

The EMBS Student Club at Louisiana State University is a professional club formed by students interested in the field of biomedical engineering. As a platform, the club enables students and faculties to stay connected with local peers. Professional activities such as seminars and students competitions can be organized to help us keep up with the forefront of biomedical engineering, and networking opportunities with outside researchers and industries can be created. As an IEEE sponsored organization, our EMBS club comes with various benefits such as subscriptions to EMBS journals and magazines, distinguished lecturer programs and funding for student activities both from IEEE local section and EMBS. With enthusiastic members and the support of LSU/IEEE, We ultimately hope to grow into a full local chapter which will have a significant impact on the campus community and the filed of biomedical engineering in Baton Rouge.

Activities

Professional Development

On May 24th, 2010 We took an all-around tour at the Penington Biomedical Research Center, one of the largest of its kind in U.S. We learned about the exciting basic and clinical research involved in this center, particularly some cutting-edge researches in the Aging and Neurodegeneration Lab.

In the future we hope to continue organizing tour trips to research centers, hospitals and such. We are also interested in inviting some local biomedical related companies to campus for visits and fairs.

Membership promotion

Prior to our inaugural meeting on February 1st, 2010, we distributed flyers across the School of Engineering and some faculties in Chemistry and Biological Science Departments. Upon this first advertising attempt, new members joined IEEE and the club, even some who did not attend the inaugural meeting. In less than 4 month since the foundation of our club on November 09, 2009, number of members has grown from 5 to 21 currently, including 8 graduate students and 13 undergraduate students from various departments (EE, ME, BE).

A new Facebook group has been created for our club to take advantage of the web resource and gain better publicity for EMBS. You are welcome to join us!

Education

Technical seminar by Dr. Michael Moore (Biomedical Engineering at Tulane University) on Feburary 1st, 2010, titled “Micro-Mirror Optics for Controlling Structure and Function in Neural Culture”. For details, see flyer.

Seminar

We are currently planning for more seminar series by researchers from Penington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge and faculties at LSU. Please check back later for more details.

Professional Development
We are in the process of organizing a visiting trip to a research lab in Penington Biomedical Research Center. Also, in the future we hope to invite some local biomedical related companies to campus for visits and fairs.

Community Service
No applicable activities yet. Please come back later.

Social Activities
Following the inaugural seminar, attendants enjoyed a networking session with refreshments and drinks. New connections were made and everyone involved had a great time.

Communication
The LSU EMBS Club got in contact with IEEE EMBS New Orleans Chapter, which created the opportunity for Dr. Moore to visit LSU and present at the inaugural seminar. Also, this event was collaborated with the local IEEE Student Branch in advertising and fund raising.

Future Planning
Publicity and membership promotion are the highest priorities for us in the near future, since IEEE is not yet highly recognized in Baton Rouge by the biomedical engineering community. We hope to promote our club by planning interesting activities (seminars, tours, competitions) and collaborating with other organizations (IEEE, CBMM, ASME, etc) in hosting events.

We have applied for the 2010 EMBS Best New Student Chapter or Club Award. If successful, it will present a great opportunity for us to fund more activities and have publicity to reach a greater community.
